Rockford Iron, Manganese, and Radium Removal Project

Project: Iron, Manganese, and Radium Removal
Municipality: Rockford, IL – Well 34
General Contractor: Scandroli Construction
Watersurplus Contact: Jim Groose, Sr VP Municipal Water Treatment

Background: A new well was drilled on the southwest side of the City of Rockford with an expected capacity of 2,000 GPM but was contaminated with iron, manganese, and radium. WaterSurplus worked with the contractor, Scandroli Construction, to design a high-rate filter plant using WaterSurplus’s OxiPlus75 catalytic filter media.
If traditional treatment using potassium permanganate feed were implemented, a 60,000-gallon detention basin and two 10’ diameter by 36’ long horizontal vessels would have been required. With design expertise from WaterSurplus, the final system required just one 10’ diameter by 34’ long horizontal filter.
Solution:
- Achieved longer filter run lengths
- Achieved low backwash
- Achieved low water recycle volumes
- Minimized system footprint
- Removed Fe, Mn, and Ra to permeate spec without potassium permanganate feed or detention basin
