Discover the difference for yourself.
Meet ImpactRO™
How do you achieve a revolutionary leap forward in performance within a system that’s been mostly static for nearly a century? By stacking six great ideas on top of each other—kind of like a multi-stage RO.
ImpactRO isn’t about a single, silver-bullet solution.
Instead, we’ve engineered a half-dozen complementary innovations and optimized them to deliver the smartest and most efficient brackish RO in the world.
PREDICT, PREVENT, AND REVERSE FOULING
1. NANOSTACK™ MEMBRANES
NanoStack™ membranes feature a revolutionary NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certified coating that incorporates a bio-inspired polymer, making the membrane exceptionally hydrophilic. NanoStack membranes are extraordinarily resistant to adhesion from scale and foulants, and enable contaminants to be swiftly flushed off the membrane surface during normal operation.
2. Feed-forward Design
ImpactRO’s Feed-Forward Design balances the distribution of feedwater across stages and membranes throughout the system, so that lead elements in each stage are fluxed more evenly. This enables consistent use of the entire active membrane surface area across all membranes in the system, resulting in more efficient operation of the equipment and maximized lifespan and performance of each NanoStack membrane.
3. Micro-disruptions
Micro-Disruptions are intermittent bursts of water that clean membranes without disrupting operations. Optimized to work with NanoStack membranes, Micro-Disruptions agitate the concentration polarization layer and flush scale and foulants to drain while remaining online.
4. Intermittent Variable Recovery
Intermittent Variable Recovery (IVR) is a strategic, automated modulation of the RO’s concentrate recovery valve. When NanoScope™ (see slide 6) senses the system slipping out of equilibrium, it automatically triggers an IVR modulation to rebalance the system, enabling operators to maintain optimal recovery without placing the RO at risk of fouling.
5. Single-point CIP
ImpactRO’s fouling mitigation characteristics reduce offline cleaning by as much as 70%, so it requires only a Single-Point CIP—one that allows you to clean each stage easily and independently.
6. NanoScope™
NanoScope is two innovations in one. First, it’s a monitor that assesses membrane performance at such a deep level that it’s able to detect previously imperceptible performance loss. Second, it uses predictive analytics and machine learning to anticipate and preempt future membrane fouling by automatically initiating ImpactRO’s disruptive actions (Micro-Disruptions and Intermittent Variable Recovery).50 gpm

INNOVATION FLOWS FROM EXPERIENCE
BORN FROM BLUE-RIBBON R&D
The complementary technologies behind ImpactRO evolved from decades of development at leading research facilities. WaterSurplus collaborated with:
- Northwestern University
- University of Texas-Austin
- U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility
PROVEN IN THE FIELD
ImpactRO is already making a difference in the field:
- Fifty ImpactRO installations are online or coming online through 2026.
- ImpactRO clients include major commercial users across industries as well as large municipalities
- Multi-year membrane testing at OCWD achieving 15-30% energy savings depending on membrane stage led to adoption of NanoStack for one full train (1050 membrane elements) at their Groundwater Replenishment System

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a high-efficiency reverse osmosis system?
A high-efficiency reverse osmosis system recovers more usable water from the same feed source while reducing energy use, membrane fouling, and wastewater compared to a conventional RO system. ImpactRO combines six complementary technologies, including NanoStack membranes, feed-forward design, and real-time fouling monitoring, to deliver higher recovery without the fouling and downtime that limit traditional RO.
How is ImpactRO different from traditional RO?
Traditional RO systems degrade over time as membranes foul, requiring more frequent cleaning, higher energy use, and shorter membrane life. ImpactRO is engineered as a steady-state system that predicts, prevents, and reverses fouling before it becomes a problem, so performance stays consistent instead of declining between cleanings.
What industries use ImpactRO?
ImpactRO is deployed across food and beverage, municipal water systems, power generation, oil and gas, water reuse, and environmental applications.
How much water can ImpactRO recover?
Recovery performance depends on feed water characteristics and system design. Applications in use today deliver up to 96% recovery.
