Job Summary
The Director of Business Development – Municipal is responsible for the strategic business development of municipal sales revenue, including for the new, surplus, rental, service, and consulting divisions. They will be responsible for generating and executing the organization’s strategic sales and revenue goals. This position will be generally a remote office position with some quarterly expected time in the office in Loves Park, IL, and most of the time in the field with customers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Business Development – Municipal position includes responsibility for executing the following essential duties and responsibilities:
- Promoting and managing all sales activities for WaterSurplus solutions and equipment in the municipal market in North America
- Organizes and participates in all business development activities (lunch-and-learns, congresses, conferences, etc.)
- Consults and negotiates with clients to prepare project specifications, generate proposals, lead time, and pricing, and manage customer communications.
- Directs, coordinates, and participates in the development and generation of sales proposals, budgets, cost estimates, bids, and contracts for new and existing customers.
- Develops and maintains good business relationships with customers on different levels and strategic suppliers/partners to the company.
- Informs the company of all activities, opportunities, issues, and project deadlines; maintains and updates the sales database (WinMan, etc.); and prepares sales forecasts.
- Analyzes and actively communicates information about the market (competition, qualitative, and quantitative market analysis).
- Confers with operation and production staff to discuss project specifications, attends kick-off meetings, manages change orders, maintains customer contact, and assists in communication throughout the project.
- Contributes to the development of sales tools.

Qualifications for Director of Business Development – Municipal
Education and/or Experience
A Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Science field with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in a related water and wastewater treatment industry.
Knowledge and Skill
The following knowledge and skills are needed for this job:

- Good negotiator with clients on pricing, features, benefits, and terms.

- Interpersonal skills and abilities to develop and maintain strong internal and external customer and potential customer relationships.
- Strong technical capability to understand and communicate about equipment technology and municipal standards effectively.
- Experience in working in an environment where teamwork and collaboration are essential to complete the work assignments and attain the goals of the organization.
Computer and Technical Skills
This job requires computer and technical skills, including strong knowledge and experience with personal computers and laptops and the Microsoft Office Suite, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, MS Project, etc. A basic understanding of computer network architecture and file structure is beneficial. Experience working with an ERP system is preferred. The ability to interpret technical drawings, specs, and manuals is also beneficial.
